Cumbria is one of the most extensively mined counties in the whole of Britain.  The lake district has been exploited for centuries for its minerals including copper, lead, zinc and barytes.  The Pennines have produced lead for over two hundred years, zinc for 100 years and also fluorspar and witherite more recently.  West Cumbria is famous for its coal and iron ore.  The Eden Valley is less well know for its gypsum and anhydrite mining, which continues to the present day.

The mine sites featured on the website have been arbitrarily chosen, mainly according to the ease of availability of digital photos.  The sites chosen are not necessarily typical for the area and the photographs shown are not necessarily a general representation of each site, but again were chosen from the digital images available to me which I personally felt were of interest.
